14 May

"Are you going anywhere special this year?"  "Well, we'll be going to Tuscany in the spring and autumn, of course. I can't wait to see how the garden is doing."
"Same for us. It feels forever since we were in Marrakech."
"John has his opera weekends, of course, and I will join him for the ones in Prague, Madrid and Vienna."
"It's a pity Sonya can't stand opera but we will go on a few city trips, I'm sure."
"In the summer we will go to Peru for ten days and maybe we'll spend a few days in Singapore, to meet up with the children."
"That sounds good. We were thinking about Cambodia again, or Kenya, or both."
"You want another drink?"
"Yes, please."
"It's not too cold out here?"
"With the heaters on? No, it's fine."
"They are so useful. What did we do before we had them?"
"In November? Sit inside?"
"Yes. So boring. Oh, did you hear about that blind woman in Madrid?"
"The one with the Matisse?"
"Yes. She never even knew it was gone."
"Talk about having a blind spot."
"You are horrible."
"Yes. You know, I forgot what happened to the thief?"
"That poor fellow was extremely unlucky."
"How so?"
"He picked an honest art dealer to sell the painting to."
"Imagine."
"You're going anywhere else next year?"
"No. That is, apart from the skiing trip. Six days with friends from uni. Well, friends; they are both terrible bores but what can you do?"
"That is a bit of a coincidence. We're also going with old friends. A pair of tedious old lesbos. Each year we expect them to bring their cats."
"How long have you been going there?"
"Les Arcs? Ages. We always rent the same apartment."
"Amazing. So do we. But don't worry, we won't bring the cats."
"Thank you. That's very considerate. You know, I keep thinking of that blind woman and her Matisse. To own something as beautiful as that and never see it."
"It is sad. Oh, I've been meaning to ask, but where do you buy your avocados. They are so amazing."
"They're from Colombia. Pricy but worth it."
"They are that."
"It's the same with bottled water. Yes, you can buy the cheap stuff but once you've tried Finnish water..."
"You're absolutely right. It's stupid not to buy the best, if you can afford it."
"I wish I could afford a Matisse. Anyway, talking of water, you want some more?"
"Yes, please. If there's more of that lime."
"The Australian finger lime? It's good, isn't it?"
"Almost as good as that Matisse."
"Well, we may not own a Matisse but at least we can see what's happening around us."
  "That is so true."
